Peace Alphabet: First Four Letters

Here are the first four letters of my Peace Alphabet for the A Letter A Week 2013 (ALAW) project.

They are hand printed on hand painted cotton fabric with stitched details using DMC floss.

Teeny tiny stitches...running, back and satin stitches.

In this alphabet the letters will take the form of birds ...in some cases doves. I envision that in most of the designs, the birds will be doing something towards peace (symbolized by the Peace sign...which I always think of as a dove's foot).

In the final format (which may be peace flags), I will write something active about Peace such as Aspiring towards Peace; Believing in Peace etc.

  1. What a process! The resulting images are delicate and beautiful...and such a lot of work.

    1. Thanks, Jo. I enjoyed designing and carving the blocks. The stitching took a while! I plan to reuse the blocks to do some prints on paper as well.

    1. Hi Kim- Your comment got temporarily mislaid. Thanks for writing one! I've enjoyed the beginnings of this alphabet and am already working on the next letters. It's been very meditative to stitch and think about Peace.

  3. Hi, Julie! I left a comment on the ALAW blog but I forgot to say this: You could make a gorgeous handmade book with your prints on paper. How about that?

    1. Hi Ersi- This comment was caught in "moderation". Yes...I was thinking about a book as well. Having carved blocks means I have a chance to try a number of different formats. Thanks!
