It's been a while since I posted about upcoming classes so I wanted to remind folks that I have a Zoom 3-session hand stitching class coming up this March called Stitch Focus: Buttonhole/Blanket Stitch. Registration for this class is ongoing (started in December 2023). I still have spaces in all three class sections below, though the Sunday and Tuesday classes are getting closer to being full. The Wednesday evening class section needs at least four more students to run so West coast USA, Hawaii and Australia...here's an opportunity for you to help make that class a go.

MaryAnne L.: Layering lines of stitch

So what is Stitch Focus: Buttonhole/Blanket Stitch? It's an opportunity for you to dive in deep and explore the possibilities that this stitch has to offer. We will explore the gamut from the very basics of creating different types of lines with the stitch... what I call "Stitch Analysis", learning a list of ways the stitch parts can be altered for different effects, Couching with the stitch, arranging multiple lines of stitch, building patterns with repetition and arrangement of stitched units, and coming off the surface with needle laces, edgings and dimensional versions of the stitch.

During the 2.5 hour class sessions, we will begin Stitch Samplers to explore the above concepts. Students will keep a Stitch Journal for weekly Journal Prompts/Exercises and for planning work. I will also offer a selection of weekly Stitch Challenges for students to further explore and develop their own original works.

Though the temps are still unbearably hot in the Northern Hemisphere, those (hopefully) cooler Fall temps are not too far off. At least we can dream about them! Fall also always reminds me of fresh starts and getting ready to learn something new. Feeling a bit nervous about what the new school year will bring but also looking forward to seeing familiar class mates and meeting new friends.

This Fall, I'm offering two favorites: Experimental Hand Stitching in September and my Boro-Style Bag workshop in November. Enroll in both and receive a $20 discount!

Experimental Hand Stitching: A Line Can Be Challenge: Radiating

When Fall comes around, I always look forward to teaching my Experimental Hand Stitching live Zoom class. I love the idea of coaxing some new students to join the hand stitching craziness and encouraging experienced stitchers to stretch themselves even further creatively. 

Over the three 2.5 hour Zoom sessions, we'll not only cover stitching basics but you will learn my signature approach to creative hand stitching using journaling and stitch challenges. The class themes covered over the three weeks include: Line, Pattern and Rhythm and Texture. I demonstrate a selection of basic hand stitches that reflect the weekly theme. Learn the "correct" way and then play with the possible ways to change or combine stitches. You will keep a Stitch Journal, where you can sketch, plan stitch challenges, write down ideas for exploration, collect inspiration and generally have a "dialog" with your stitching. What I love is that even though we all start with the basics, students quickly begin to move in their own directions with stitching...finding their individual voices. For more experienced or returning stitchers, I offer a selection of more advanced stitching challenges to push you further.

Boro-Style Bag

My popular Boro-Style Bag workshop is back this fall! Learn my fabric collaging technique and then add pattern and texture using Running stitch variations based on Sashiko-Style patterns and Pattern Darning. I'll teach students some different approaches to creative closures and learn an easy twining technique to create a a trim/cross strap combo. The finished bag is the perfect size for your cellphone and a few other essentials. I've scheduled this workshop in time for you to finish this for holiday gifting! The class is two 2.5 hour Zoom sessions. 

I'm offering three class sections. All times are Eastern USA (Washington DC):

What is Stitch Play? 

It's a concept I initially developed in 2020 as a lesson for the TextileArtist.org Stitch Club. Originally conceived as a way to play with Buttonhole/Blanket stitch by randomly choosing from a list of adjectives to describe stitch character and format, I further developed the class in 2021 into a multi-session Zoom course. I'm excited to be offering this Zoom course once again!

In this four-session Zoom class, you will explore the potential of hand stitches through a series of stitching "games" that are designed to get you thinking about stitching in new ways. Each class session focuses on a playful approach using concepts such as maps, wordplay, random choices, stitch combos and stitching the "wrong" way. Along the way, you will develop your own vocabulary of stitch variations to use in future stitched work.

I'm gearing up for my 2022 Fall Zoom classes and I hope you will consider joining me for some exciting exploratory stitching. Both multi-session classes take a deep dive into hand stitching...pushing you to get creative with basic stitches...getting you to stretch and realize the potential in them. 

In both classes you will receive weekly Journal Prompts/Exercises and a selection of Stitch Challenges to get you focused so that you explore with intention. This combination of sketching/writing and stitching has worked for my students over the many years that I've taught hand stitching. I want to help you to develop your own stitching "voice" and this technique is a great way to do it.

Buttonhole/Blanket Stitch Sampler and Stitch Journal

I am offering two class sections for both the Experimental Hand Stitching and Stitch Focus: Buttonhole/Blanket Stitch classes. A Tuesday morning group and Wednesday evening group to hopefully cover different time zone constraints. All times are EST (I live in the Washington DC area if that helps pinpoint the time difference for you!). All class sessions will be recorded and recordings will remain available for students to view for two months after the final class session. 

There will be an optional Meet and Greet a week before the start of class so you can meet your fellow classmates, followed by three 2.5 hour class sessions. See below for specific dates and times. Each week we explore a new theme and basic hand stitches that relate to that theme. Themes include: Line; Pattern and Rhythm; and Texture. Although this is my beginning level hand stitching class, the Stitch Challenges are for any level. To entice some of you more confident hand stitchers, I am including, for the first time, Further Exploration Stitch Challenges. These challenges will push students a bit further and include additional techniques (such as surface design, fabric collage for example). Stitch Focus: Buttonhole/Blanket Stitch

This is a new class and a new concept. We will focus on one stitch..the Buttonhole/Blanket stitch and explore it in depth. I'm so excited about this new class! I had the opportunity to take a deep dive into this stitch while preparing for my first TextileArtist.org Stitch Club lesson. I'll admit that until I took the opportunity to study this stitch, it was not a favorite. But ...Boy when I had the chance to play with it...so many possibilities opened up for me and I realized its versatility and potential. I now want to share what I've learned with you and see what you discover too! We will explore using the stitch to create different qualities of line; building shapes and patterns, layering and coming off the surface including buttonhole laces. I can't wait! Julie's Winter Session Online Classes at The Art League School

I'm gearing up for another exciting semester of online hand stitching classes with The Art League School. Registration starts on November 8, 2021. I will be offering two, five session Zoom classes: Mapping Memories with Stitch and Hand Stitching Continued: Dimensional Stitches and Fabric Manipulation. 

Both classes begin on January 26, 2022. Mapping Memories with Stitch meets in the morning from 10:00 AM- 12:30 PM and Hand Stitching Continued meets in the evening from 7:00-9:00 PM. Classes are on Eastern USA time (check Washington DC time for reference). All classes will be recorded so if a class doesn't fit your time zone, you can still take the class via the recordings. The recordings remain available to students for one month after the final class session. There is an optional $15 kit (shipping is extra) for each class. The beautiful images you see in this post are from former students who took these classes over the past year. 

In Mapping Memories with Stitch, students will use hand stitching and fabric manipulation techniques to explore memories of place, family and travel. Each session centers on a map-related theme and students will explore a variety of map formats. I will be introducing students to a number of contemporary textile artists who use maps as part of their work. Themes we will cover include:

In Hand Stitching Continued, students will learn a variety of textural stitches, stitches that start with a warp, Buttonhole lace and dimensional Buttonhole variations, manipulating fabric to create dimension and Cording, Trapunto and other stuffing techniques. Nature will inspire students and they will have the opportunity to choose one or more nature "muses" as a means of developing work in class.
