Boro and Beyond February in July

I'm determined to get caught up on blog posts from the last 6 months! The focus will primarily be on student work but I might throw in a few posts about my own work as well!

Here is work from the Boro and Beyond: The Versatile Running Stitch workshop that I gave in February at Artistic Artifacts. On the first day of class, we focused on using the Running stitch to create different types of line and pattern.

The second day focused on patchwork, applique and reverse applique, weaving and collage. We also played with surface darning and using running stitch to distort fabric.

I'll be teaching this workshop again on October 20 & 21 at Artistic Artifacts. Here is a link in case you want to sign up!

Jumpstart in Hand Stitching Workshop

Heidi Z: Textures and Layers on hand painted fabric.

It's been a little over a month since I last blogged. January slipped by! Two trips away and I am still regrouping!

Here is student work from the weekend workshop, Jumpstart in Hand Stitching, that I held in early January at the Art League School in Alexandria, VA. In this fast track version of my Hand Stitching class, students get to play with line, pattern, texture and layers. The color palette is limited to keep students focused on the stitches themselves and their mark-making potential.

On day #1, we spent a couple of hours painting and printing our own fabric backgrounds...including cotton, linen, silk and cheesecloth. Later on that first day, students stitched samplers to try out some stitches.

On day #2, students were able to use their painted and printed fabrics. The focus on the second day was  texture and layering. We covered applique and reverse applique techniques along with weaving fabric strips. Students really took off with the layers and textures!

Hand Stitching (Fall 2017) Part 2

Susan S: A line can be...feathery!
This is the second of two blog posts about my Fall Hand Stitching class. To see the first post...go here. The class focused on using a selection of hand stitches in unique ways...learning to stretch! Themes covered included: line, pattern and rhythm, texture and layers. First time students worked in a limited palette. Students painted and printed their own fabrics to use in class.

I also had two continuing students who took the class as an independent study. Jan B. referenced photos from a summer trip with family to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Susan G. continued work on her Healing Cloths that are "portraits" of family members.
