Day #12 (the Final Day): Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there.

Today is the final day of the Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt. Today I award the Grand Prize of four fabulous books by Quarry (including Fabric Printing at Home!).

I want to especially thank those of you who participated in the Printing Challenges and also those of you who made some excellent guesses during the Guessing Game Challenges.  I was really inspired by your prints on fabric and paper. I loved all the layering, colors and textures! I had a lot of fun putting this together and hope that you had fun too!

Day #10: Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt

It's Day #10 of the Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt...only two more days left! I really enjoyed seeing yesterday's Reveal of your Rubbings...lots of interesting and colorful prints...some surprises for me..cement? Who woulda thought?! A big thanks to those who participated.

Even though we are on our last challenge (Mix It Up!), I'm keeping all the previous challenges open and will be updating them through Saturday, May 9. Can you guess what I used? HINT: If you've been following along, you probably recognize most of these items! I decided to add some color to this last series of prints. I also decided to challenge myself to use a color that is NOT normally in my vocabulary...pink!

This is one of my "must have" tools for cutting paper, cardboard, plastic film and creating stencils.

It's Day #9 of the Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt...we're in the home stretch for this event! Hope that you're enjoying seeing the wide variety of prints you can make with everyday items ...a real treasure trove!

Today is also the Reveal Day for your Rubbings! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you found to put under your fabric or paper.

It's now time for me to reveal what I used for my Rubbings in yesterday's post. First, I did want to say how happy I was to see more of you leaving comments...yippee!

Day #8: Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt

We've made it to Day #8 of the Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt. Did you get a chance to see yesterday's Texture Prints by Scavenger Hunt participants? I hope so! I encourage more of you to join in on any of the previous Printing Challenges (Circles, Lines and Textures). I will continue to update all of these through Saturday, May 9. Remember...to be eligible to win that lovely selection of books from Quarry (including my book, Fabric Printing at Home!), you need to participate in at least one of the Printing Challenges. So grab some paint and fabric or paper and join in the fun! The newest Printing Challenge is Rubbings...hope to see some of yours on Thursday!

Today is the fourth Guessing Game and Giveaway Challenge. As promised, here is a short "how-to" on Rubbings.

I usually make what I call "Brayer Rubbings" on fabric. I use a dense foam brayer (Testrite), a glass palette (piece of glass with taped edges) and fabric paint (usually opaque). I also have a padded surface covered with plastic for printing.

Slip a flat texture, texture block or objects such as rubber bands under a piece of fabric.

Pour approximately 1/4 teaspoon of fabric paint onto the glass palette and roll the foam brayer over the paint until it is evenly coated.


Roll the paint-covered brayer over the fabric covering the texture.

 Shift the texture to another position under the fabric and continue. Add more paint to the glass palette as needed.

You can also use paint or dye sticks and rub over the area of the fabric or paper covering the texture.

2. Thumbtacks stuck in corrugated cardboard

5. Strips of corrugated cardboard rolled and glued to cardboard
6. Rolled paper cut into cross-sections and glued to cardboard
7. Household sponge

Challenge #4: Find items in your kitchen to create Rubbings on fabric or paper.

HINT: The easiest description of a Rubbing is to slip a flat texture, texture block or objects under your fabric and then roll a layer of paint over the top to pick up the designs/textures from below. You can also use paint or dye sticks, crayons or pencils to do rubbings. I'll have a short tutorial tomorrow on Rubbings.


I often like to use a Rubbing as a first layer on my printed fabrics. Rubbings can also be great fun to do with resists...

Brayer rubbing using confectioners' sugar resist.

Here is a fabric I made by slipping a cardboard block with hot glue designs under the fabric and rolling over it with confectioners' sugar resist. You can find out more about Rubbings and Resists in Chapter 6: Irresistible: Fabric Resists Using Kitchen Ingredients in my book, Fabric Printing at Home.

Don't forget that you can also glue small items to cardboard too! And, of course there are the obvious textures such as shelf liner (Chapter 2: Kitchen Textures and Found Object Printing).

I've decided that I'm going to continue to update the reveal day posts throughout the Hunt in case more of you would like to participate in the Printing Challenges. Day #3: Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt- Circle Challenge Update #2

It's Day #3 of the Fabric Printing at Home Scavenger Hunt...the first reveal day. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a number of you have been working away in your studios or on your kitchen or dining room tables to create some Circle Prints! If you haven't gotten to it yet...it's not too late...and oh so simple! If you aren't a fabric aficionado...you can always grab a stamp pad, a piece of scrap paper and an object...viola.. a print that you can photograph and post or send to me (threadborn@gmail.com). Don't forget to leave a comment with a link. Remember...you have to take part in at least one of the printing challenges to be eligible for the Big Prize.

Circle Prints Challenge

Linda Stokes has some multiple-layered circle prints in yummy colors. Love that red one! She also has a great photo showing what she used to print her fabrics.

Karla has a wonderful piece on her Facebook page. Loaded with all sizes and types of circles and printed with her gelatin plate ...so colorful and cheery!

Susan has a great step-by-step showing how she made her piece. I'm still amazed by how she got the spirals to fit in the circles!

Deb went with a "wine" theme...check out her circle fabric...very cool!

Here are some photos of Clare Gilliland's circles...she especially loved printing with the basket from the jewelry cleaner!
