Hand Stitching ONLINE: Theme #3: Texture

Jude J: Texture Stitch Challenge

Texture was the theme for class #3 in the Spring session of Hand Stitching ONLINE (offered through The Art League School). Discussion focused on the concepts of Actual Texture (texture you can touch) versus Visual Texture (the representation of texture using marks) in art. Marks made with hand stitching can cover both categories as seen above in Jude J.'s piece. The marks created with stitch are representative of a nest or fur (visually) but one could also feel the actual texture of the raised stitches on the fabric's surface.

Another topic discussed was that of Stitch Density. Dense areas of stitching are more effective when surrounded by areas of less dense stitching.

In this class session, students were also challenged to create a "new" stitch by combining stitches covered in the first three sessions. Jill B. met the challenge and even drew these beautiful illustrations!

Catch Up Again! Fall Hand Stitching: Texture

I'm catching my breath again and trying to catch up! I want to share with you these amazing stitched works by the students in my fall Hand Stitching class. You've already seen examples of Line and Pattern. The third session focused on Texture and stitches such as French and Bullion Knots, Straight Stitch (used for seeding), a self couching stitch and composite stitches such as Raised Stem and Surface Darning. We also tried lacing and wrapping stitches for texture. I challenged students to design some of their own stitches. Some students continued to add texture stitches to works they started in one of the previous two sessions. I hope you enjoy seeing each student's unique take on Texture. Next blog post: Layers.

Hand Stitching: A Bit of This and That!

Susan P.: Texture Challenge

The week has flown by! Mom was visiting and my son, Aaron, graduated with his Masters in Psychology! Much celebrating! So... I'm finally posting about last Wednesday's Hand Stitching class...just in time.

Susan P. completed her Texture Sampler and also a Challenge piece. Spirals are a definite theme (see last week's piece too).

Claudia E. stitched another figure. Her stitched lines are very expressive! And...I think this class is her first experience hand stitching!

Kate G. continued work on her Pattern Challenge using a piece of black and white commercial fabric. A great example for this challenge!

Peggy G. continued to work on her cloud series. She started playing around with adding metallic and shiny threads to pieces (not shown here). I love her use of the cheesecloth layers and also the example where the stitched background "reveals" the cloud shape.
