Julie's Winter Session Online Classes at The Art League School

Please note: The Art League School has postponed the start of all their classes including online classes. The new start date for my classes is January 26.

I'm gearing up for another exciting semester of online hand stitching classes with The Art League School. Registration starts on November 8, 2021. I will be offering two, five session Zoom classes: Mapping Memories with Stitch and Hand Stitching Continued: Dimensional Stitches and Fabric Manipulation. 

Both classes begin on January 26, 2022. Mapping Memories with Stitch meets in the morning from 10:00 AM- 12:30 PM and Hand Stitching Continued meets in the evening from 7:00-9:00 PM. Classes are on Eastern USA time (check Washington DC time for reference). All classes will be recorded so if a class doesn't fit your time zone, you can still take the class via the recordings. The recordings remain available to students for one month after the final class session. There is an optional $15 kit (shipping is extra) for each class. The beautiful images you see in this post are from former students who took these classes over the past year. 

In Mapping Memories with Stitch, students will use hand stitching and fabric manipulation techniques to explore memories of place, family and travel. Each session centers on a map-related theme and students will explore a variety of map formats. I will be introducing students to a number of contemporary textile artists who use maps as part of their work. Themes we will cover include:

In Hand Stitching Continued, students will learn a variety of textural stitches, stitches that start with a warp, Buttonhole lace and dimensional Buttonhole variations, manipulating fabric to create dimension and Cording, Trapunto and other stuffing techniques. Nature will inspire students and they will have the opportunity to choose one or more nature "muses" as a means of developing work in class.

Connecting to Memories: The Stitched Word: Mapping Memories

The third session of Connecting to Memories: The Stitched Word, focused on creating Memory (mind) Maps around a memory connecting to place. This was interpreted in many different ways...from memories of a "touchstone" place such as a family farm or the ocean (Atlantic and Pacific) to a more recent memory of "the debate stage".

I demoed a number of different applique and reverse applique techniques and was excited to see how the students incorporated a number of these techniques in their pieces.

Barbara B.: Three pieces to represent the three debates (Shut Up Man!, Throwing Shade, So Cute). These were eventually sewn together into a final piece called "Leading Voices" (and yes, the fly made an appearance) that will be part of the Tiny Pricks Project.

To Tell a Story with Cloth: Connections, Impressions, and Memories: Mapping Memories (and More)

Ann Z.: Memories of a semester abroad in Spain and a trip to Cuevo de Altamira. Ann stitched and painted on an actual map that she saved from that time.

This is the second blog post about my five-session class, To Tell a Story with Cloth: Connections, Impressions, and Memories. The theme for week two was Mapping Memories. Students were asked to create a "map" of a memory or memories. We started the class with a journaling exercise...creating a Mind Map (web) of a memory. From there, students had a choice of mapping themes...including.. a Journey/Travel Map, a Treasures Map (Where to find...), a Neighborhood Map, or a Senses/Impressions Map. We covered texture printing techniques including printing directly with textures, creating hot glue, cardboard, adhesive-backed foam and moldable foam texture blocks. We also covered applique and reverse applique techniques and building applique bases using patchwork, collage and weaving.
A lot to pack into five hours!

Here are some of the fabrics created in class...

Here are some different "takes" on mapping by some of the students. Other students are continuing work on their pieces and I will be posting more about them when they are complete.

Jan B.: Jan was the director of a multi-acre organic farm. After a particularly stressful day, she stepped outside to regroup...she was awed by the beauty of the farm.

Alice A.: Color play using reverse applique and pleating techniques.

Alice A.: Color Memory: Alice spent her childhood in Mexico. She has very strong memories of walking through the marketplace. These are the colors she remembers...along with the billowing tent-like fabrics.

Ann Z.: Color Memory: Ann spent time living in Honduras. These are the colors that remind her of that place. She found it interesting that they were some of the same colors she picked for her first color association exercise (see above).

Judy M. created this cathartic piece ...that truly is a healing cloth...expressing her anger and sadness about the recent death of a close friend and the tenth anniversary of her husband's death.

We are having so many fascinating discussions in class. I am learning so much. That is teaching at its best...when you are learning along with teaching!
